Sheet Metal Forming: Spinning

Through spinning the plate metal rotates and gets forced at one side making roll parts. Plate metal rotates rapidly, meanwhile rolls push it into a unit refered as mandril shaping required piece. Samples of this technique are satellite dish, misical instrument, hubcap and so on. It is commonly aplied on a CNC machine and operates through blank, mandril and roll toolings. Blank is a disk like metal plate, which is turned into a piece. Mandril is the piece inner tight form, and blanked is pushed towards it. In case of intricate pieces multi-part mandrils are suitable. As mandrils are not exposed to excessive wear, they may be out of plstic or may be wooden. In case of large production scales metal mandrils are adviseable. Tools may operate through a few steps to accomplish plate metal formation. The tooling is a roll wheel fixed on the rod. Rolls can be of steel and brass, of various caliber and density.

Spinning can be of two types: traditional and shear. In case of traditional one the roll presses blank till it fits the mandril outline. The obtained piece will possess less caliber than that of the blank and will possess stable density. In case of shear spin, presses blank towards mandril and produces downwards strength during the motion and epands the plate along mandril. Thus, the external caliber of obtained piece remains the same as the primary blank caliber, though the piece wall density will appear slimmer.
